One of RI Working Families Power's highest priority bills, Revenue for Rhode Island (House Bill 5473, sponsored by Rep. Karen Alzate) is being heard this coming Tuesday, May 6 in the House Finance Committee.
This particular bill would raise taxes for the top 1% of RI's income-earners, with a 3% surtax on taxable income above $625,000. It is a crucial part of a legislative package that would help rebalance Rhode Island’s upside-down tax system that currently has those earning the least paying a higher proportion of their taxes than the wealthiest Rhode Islanders.
A fairer tax system guarantees that the richest 1% will pay their fair share to fund our public schools, colleges, roads, bridges, and public transit. By passing these reforms, we can create a new revenue stream of over $190 million annually that will ensure our state’s most important programs will be funded, despite Trump and Musk’s cuts.
Join RIWFP and dozens of coalition organizations at the State House, where members of our community will testify in support of Rep. Alzate's bill. Let's pack the audience and show the committee and our opponents that the time to act is now—the rich must pay their fair share to keep our state running.
Wear green and come when you're able—many of us will be there all evening! If no street parking is available, you can park at the mall for 2 hours for free.
